Five jobs worth doing in the garden this winter

Feed the soil now with compost or manure so it's ready come spring. Get garlic, broad beans and sweet peas in the ground. Give citrus a winter feed and check for scale, a spray of white oil sorts it. Mulch your beds a few centimetres deep but keep it clear of the trunks. Hold off pruning the deciduous fruit trees until the leaves are down. Pop in and we'll match you to the right mix.

Cold months are the best brewing months

Hold your fermentation between 18 and 20 degrees and a dark ale or stout will reward the wait. Sanitise everything that touches the wort, twice. Most kits say seven days but a fortnight in the bottle tastes better. And one Edwards sachet turns a plain bottle of spirit into something worth sharing, ten minutes and an overnight rest.
