PREP IS THE JOB

The paint is the easy half

Filling, sanding and taping take longer than the painting does, and they're what decides whether the finish looks done or looks rushed. Fill it, let it go off properly, sand it back flush, then tape and sheet before you open anything. Friday is the pick of the week for it at 20 degrees with light winds by the afternoon. Bring us a photo of what you're painting onto and we'll tell you what it wants underneath.

BRASS OR PLASTIC

Both are right, on different taps

A plastic joiner is totally fine on a hose you coil up and put away, and it will go brittle sitting in the sun through a Strathalbyn summer. Brass costs more and it's still there in 5 years, which makes it the one for the fitting at the tap that never moves. Most perished hoses give out within 100mm of the fitting, so a repairer and 10 minutes usually beats a new hose.

Natives On The Bench

NATIVES ON THE BENCH

Grevilleas, callistemons and sheoaks that are built for this soil and this rainfall. What's out there changes week to week, so come and see what's just come in.

Something You Can Eat

SOMETHING YOU CAN EAT

Berry canes, passionfruit and fruiting stock, plus the herbs and vegetable seedlings that go in from now. Ask us what's ready to plant out and what still wants another fortnight.

Pots And Succulents

POTS AND SUCCULENTS

Hardy potted colour for a spot that gets forgotten, and succulents that'll forgive you a missed watering. New stock lands most weeks.

MULCH WHILE THE SOIL IS STILL WET

You're keeping water in, not adding it

Mulch holds the moisture that's already down there, so it does its best work on wet ground and almost nothing on dry. Right now the soil under your beds is about as wet as it gets all year. Put it down 50 to 75mm deep, keep it back off the stems so nothing rots at the collar, and water it in once. Leave it until October and you'll spend summer making up the difference.

THE SHED JUST WENT UP 12 DEGREES

Same gear, different beer

Ale yeast wants 18 to 22 degrees and goes hot and fruity above that. Lager yeast wants 10 to 15 and will simply stall in a shed sitting at 24. So a batch that tasted wrong in July and one that tastes wrong in October have usually gone wrong for opposite reasons. A wet towel over the fermenter and a fan does more than anything you can buy. Tell us how it tasted and we'll have a fair guess at why.

WHAT'S IN THE FREEZER

And the 2 cheapest things in the section

The bait here is frozen and it lives in a freezer, so give us a ring to check what's in it before you drive over. Pilchards, cockles, prawns, squid and worms most weeks. The crab measure and the cockle measure are a couple of dollars each and they're the 2 things in the whole section that keep you out of trouble, so put them in the box now and forget about them.
